Kari Fotis is the founder and owner of the Hampton Roads Dyslexia Center. A retired special education teacher with nearly 20 years of service in the public school system, Kari developed a passion for working with students with dyslexia early on in her career. Kari always dreamed of opening a tutoring center to help meet the demand for qualified professionals to help students with dyslexia and other literacy challenges. Kari has a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction in Special Education K-12 with endorsements in learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. Kari is a certified Wilson Dyslexia Therapist as well as a certified Structured Literacy Specialist with the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI), a subsidiary of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). The Wilson Reading System is a gold standard intervention for students struggling with dyslexia. It is a researched based intervention that proves itself time and again in the hands of skilled, certified instructors.

“We came to Kari during our son’s second grade year, after watching him struggle with learning to read throughout kindergarten and first grade.  By the time Kari began tutoring Ethan, he was very far behind his peers on both reading and writing; we were afraid he’d never learn to read, much less learn to love it.  To our utter amazement, what had been a monumental source of stress quickly turned to one of happiness.  Ethan loved tutoring sessions with Kari from the start, so much so that he preferred tutoring to any of the other activities in his schedule. Kari transformed what had frequently been the source of tears and frustration into an activity Ethan looked forward to more than any other!  It was nothing short of miraculous to watch his growth and progression as they worked together each week. What was even sweeter to my mom-heart was to see my shy little boy find comfort and confidence with a tutor who embraced him and his unique interests so wholeheartedly, finding countless ways to incorporate his favorite topics into each lesson. We just cannot recommend Kari highly enough, as a reading/writing tutor, or as an individual!  She is the kindest, and most skilled teacher a parent or child could ever ask for and we continue to feel so much gratitude for the work she did with Ethan!”

“Ms. Fotis is a great tutor!  Before her, I could barely read at all. Then Mrs. Fotis taught me a lot of words and how to pronounce them. After about a month I had a large vocabulary, in fact I got into a lot of different books about science, science-fiction, poetry and fiction. Then I always used books to find answers. From then on, I loved to read!”

“Mrs. Fotis was recommended by a wonderful resource at CHKD.  Mrs. Fotis is professional and creates a learning environment where children want to come and work with her.  She was willing to pick up with Tyler where his first tutor left off, which was critical in Tyler’s development.  As you can imagine, tutoring for so many years as a young child was not an easy task.  Mrs. Fotis has great empathy and ability to work with children during difficult times.  Often times, tutoring is done in the evening, when everyone is tired after a long day, but Mrs. Fotis always took the time needed with Tyler and helped him learn at his own speed.  Mrs. Fotis was also working on additional Wilson certification while continuing to tutor and I am so grateful Tyler was able to benefit from her hard work.  Her desire to help children is unwavering and evident by her endeavor to become certified at her own cost while also working a fulltime job as a teacher.  After Tyler finished with Mrs. Fotis, I was convinced that he could probably teach Wilson himself.  We cannot be prouder of our son's determination from where he started and to where he will continue to go and this is because of the Wilson skills Mrs. Fotis instilled in him.  Even 4 years later, any time I have a question about Tyler’s education, I reach out to Mrs. Fotis and she responds immediately.  Thank god we were fortunate enough to find Mrs. Fotis and I know she will always be in Tyler’s corner for however long he needs her. “

“Kari Fotis has worked with our son both in a school setting and with private lessons. Our son qualified for special education services from a young age and we worked with numerous professionals over the course of an eight year period. Two individuals that worked with our son stood out above all the rest. One of those was Kari. We cannot offer high enough praise for Kari. Kari was instrumental in the progress of our son’s education and was always an advocate for our son. For that, we will be forever grateful to Kari.”

“Kari Fotis has been an absolute blessing to my son.  When we met Kari he was not progressing in reading within the classroom. Kari quickly helped us identify what would help him.  Through weekly tutoring sessions he was able to progress and now reads on grade level.  He continues to utilize the strategies in the classroom that Kari taught him.  Kari is great to work with, she is honest and kind.  She will answer any question you have and work to provide you resources for home study as well.  I cannot say enough about the impact she had on our family.  I firmly believe that without Kari's work with our son he would not have progressed in reading with what was being done in the classroom alone.  He needed a different way of learning and Kari provided that beautifully.   I will be forever grateful.”

“With tutoring from Mrs. Fotis, I watched my daughter transition from tears at the mention of homework to joy and a love of reading. As a dyslexic Mom, it is heart breaking to watch my child struggle with the same thing I struggled through.  Mrs. Fotis was truly a God send for us and gave us direction at a time when we felt lost and overwhelmed. Ellison left each lesson feeling empowered and excited to attend the next. She is now reading on grade level with her peers and more importantly, has a love for reading and a renewed self-confidence.”

“I had so much fun with Mrs. Fotis. She would let me write on the white board sometimes.  She just made things fun and was always really proud of me.” - Ellie

“ I’m so very thankful that all THREE of my girls made the honor roll! A. got straight A’s. Not bad for her first quarter as a middle schooler and A. came in with mostly A’s and few B’s. Y’all my E.G., that precious girl, has struggled from the first day of Kindergarten and she did it! My sweet E., her first quarter of 5th grade, she finally made the honor roll with all A’s and 2 B’s. The power and confidence her tutor has given her is so special to me, thank you, Mrs. Kari.

If you are that mom reading this thinking “God I wish I could say all my kiddos made the honor roll”, don’t give up! Just keep supporting them and accept them for giving it their all. Lord knows this may be the only time I can say all 3 did it. Giving them confidence and support will go so much further than a darn report card.”

“When my son was in 2nd grade his teacher noticed he was really struggling. It had me in tears and I felt helpless. Then I was told about this amazing teacher Mrs. Fotis. When I called her I was crying cause I truly needed someone to understand our struggle. She told me to stop crying and she would be happy to help. She did just that!! She had the patience of a saint and really understood my son’s struggle. So from 2nd grade all the way to the end of 5th grade Kari was a part of our lives 2 days a week. My son loved her so much. When he started middle school he was very nervous about not having her tutor him anymore. It was time for him to try on his own. She also needed to share her amazing skills with other kids. He is now a rising 9th grader and has done very well in school!! I still communicate with Kari to this very day. Especially going into this new virtual learning year. I am worried because I feel my son is a better learner in the school environment. She has reassured me that if he seems to struggle she will match me up with a great tutor. The fact I trust that with all my heart should speak volumes to any concerned parent looking for a tutor in the elementary school level. She is absolutely the best and any child and parent will be very lucky to have her be a part of their lives.”
